PE and Sport Premium

The PE and Sport Premium is government funding provided to primary schools to support sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, physical activity and school sport.

About the PE and sport premium

The PE and Sport Premium has supported schools to make significant improvements to PE, school sport and physical activity since 2013. It has helped schools strengthen their provision and remove barriers so that all children and young people, regardless of their background or ability, can achieve and thrive through access to high-quality PE, sport and physical activity opportunities.

PE and Sport Premium Transition Update

The Government has announced that the current PE and Sport Premium funding model will transition to a new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, expected to begin operating from Spring 2027. As part of this transition, the Government has confirmed a £150 million transitional payment for primary schools for the 2026/27 academic year, alongside continued investment in PE, school sport and physical activity.

For the 2026/27 academic year, schools will receive a one-off transition payment through the existing PE and Sport Premium funding allocations. Schools can use this funding throughout the academic year to support high-quality PE, physical activity and school sport provision.

Schools should continue to invest in approaches that build capacity, create sustainable improvements and deliver long-term impact. This includes focusing on the Department for Education's five key indicators:

  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
  • The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • A broader experience of a range of sports and physical activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport

Full guidance, including examples of appropriate and inappropriate use of funding, is available on the DfE website.

Access the latest PE and Sport Premium Conditions of Grant here. This sets out the terms of the grant, including how funding can be used, what spending is not permitted and the requirements schools must meet.

School governors also play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and the effective use of funding in line with their school's context. To support this, the Department for Education (DfE) and the Local Government Association (LGA) have developed a monitoring tool that sets out key areas of focus for governing boards when evaluating PE and Sport Premium spending. You can access it here.

How to use the PE and sport premium transition toolkit 2026/27

The Department for Education has developed and published this three-part PE and sport premium transition toolkit to support schools in planning, managing, monitoring, and evaluating their use of PE and sport premium funding during the 2026/27 academic year.

The toolkit is intended to help schools make effective use of funding, maintain clear records throughout the year, and prepare for the statutory digital expenditure reporting return by 31 July 2027.

The three resources are designed to be used together and support compliance with the PE and sport premium guidance and conditions of grant.

Part A – Monitoring Form

Part A supports schools to reflect on previous spending, identify priorities, plan activity, monitor progress, evaluate impact and evidence outcomes throughout the academic year. It is intended to act as a live working document and support preparation for reporting.

Part B – Spend Tracker

Part B supports schools to record and monitor PE and sport premium expenditure throughout the year, helping schools track allocations, reconcile spending, maintain accurate financial records and prepare for end-of-year reporting.

Part C – Strategic Guidance and Practical Ideas

Part C provides reflection questions, practical examples, evidence-informed suggestions and strategic considerations across the five key indicators. It is intended to support schools in making sustainable and impactful spending decisions and should be used alongside Parts A and B, the PE and sport premium guidance and conditions of grant.

Using the toolkit

The three parts are designed to complement one another and should be used together throughout the academic year. Collectively, they support schools to review previous provision, identify priorities, plan, and monitor expenditure, evaluate impact, and maintain the evidence needed to demonstrate effective use of funding.

While the toolkit has been published by the Department for Education as a practical resource to support implementation of the PE and sport premium, but it does not replace the statutory PE and sport premium guidance, conditions of grant or digital reporting requirements.
