School Storytelling Toolkit

As part of your involvement in a YST programme, we have asked you to share your experiences with us so we can understand how it is working in your school or area.

Please watch the video below for an introduction to the Four Steps of Storytelling.

You can access the full storytelling toolkit in English on the right hand side of this page. Below this, you can access further reading and support (in English).

For the full storytelling toolkit and further reading and support in Welsh, these can be downloaded as part of the Welsh toolkit. To download the toolkit in Welsh, please click here.

Step 1 - Think about your story idea

Writing stories is like writing about climbing a mountain...

  1. Base Camp - Build Up: Begin with the essentials. Who? Where? Build empathy with the reader and encourage them to want to read on.
  2. Start your climb - Build Up: What was the problem to be addressed? Use evidence and statistics to help build the story.
  3. Reach the peak - What did you do? How did you solve the problem? What were the key activities?
  4. Climb back down - What happened? What was the immediate impact? Any data or quotes to support?
  5. Back at base - Where are you going next? How would you make it sustainable? What are your next key steps?

Step 2 - Get the right consent from those involved in your story

Please watch the video below.

You can access the consent form templates (in English) on the right-hand side. For templates in Welsh, these can be downloaded as part of the Welsh toolkit by clicking the download button above.

Step 3 - Capture your story

Please watch the video below.

Not sure where to start? We have provided a number of templates to help get started with recording your story in the flowchart, which you can download on the right. This might help you decide what story you want to tell and how best to start recording it using the templates provided.

You can access examples of stories in written and video format (both in English) on the right-hand side.

Step 4 - Share your story

Share your story with the Youth Sport Trust. Send your story, along with the correct consent forms, to the Programme Manager or the Research & Insight Team at the Youth Sport Trust.

Consider other ways to share your story. Can you put snippets on your school social medial channels? Can you include the story in a school newsletter or on your school website? Can you send the story to the local paper?
