Children’s lives are changing – they are less active and spend less time outdoors than previous generations. Support us in promoting the Class of 2035 Commission's report.

The Class of 2035 Commission has published its final report and recommendations for change.

We want to encourage their ideas to be adopted so we can use the power of movement, play and sport to improve children’s health, happiness and life chances. We would therefore we grateful if you would consider sharing the report with your Member of Parliament (MP). To help with this, some draft text is provided below.

If you’re not sure, you can find out who your MP is and how to contact them here.

Dear [insert name] MP,

I am writing to you to share the Class of 2035 Commission’s recommendations for change and to ask for your support in encouraging greater use of movement, play and sport to deliver the best outcomes for children and young people.

The Class of 2035 Commission was formed by Youth Sport Trust after the charity’s latest Class of 2035 report warned, without change:

  • Almost half (48%) of children will spend three or more hours on screens for entertainment each day
  • More than a third (34%) will fail to be active for even 30 minutes a day
  • Type II diabetes diagnoses in children will double, reaching 500 new cases each year

In response to this, the Class of 2035 Commission brought together leaders from across healthcare to share data and insights, before putting forward recommendations for change. The Commission is calling for action to:

  • Raise awareness of the UK Chief Medical Officers’ physical activity guidance for children among healthcare professionals
  • Strengthen and expand the social prescribing pathway for children and young people
  • Deliver a minimum amount of physical activity within every school and early years setting
  • Increase skills and competence for staff in the PE and School Sport Network
  • Implement a national wellbeing measurement programme for children and young people
  • Create a national, cross-government Children and Young People’s Physical Activity Strategy

You can read the Class of 2035 Commission’s report here.

Like many people, I am concerned about children and young people’s health and wellbeing. Regular physical activity is essential to support health and happiness, and the Commission’s proposals for change can help every child enjoy an active start in life and access the associated benefits.

I would be grateful to you for anything you can do to help highlight the Commission’s recommendations, including sharing the report with ministers at the Department of Health and Social Care and lending your voice to any of the proposals you feel strongly about.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this request.

Yours sincerely,
