National School Sports Week is also officially recognised by the European Commission as an event associated with European School Sport Day, which will take place this year on Friday 25 September during the European Week of Sport. This year's theme is STEP, PEDAL, MOVE - ACTIVITY MOBILITY IN SCHOOLS.
As well as taking part in National School Sports Week, schools in the UK can also register to join in the fun of European School Sport Day via the website, which will also give them access to lots of free resources to support their events.
On the last Friday of September every year during the European Week of Sport, schools are invited to #BeActive for at least 120 minutes of any kind of physical activity. European School Sport Day is a flagship event for European Week of Sport as it promotes the same values of health-enhancing physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. In 2025, over 15,600 schools took part, involving 3.7 million children. European School Sport Day was celebrated in more than 40 countries across three continents.
European School Sport Day is organised by a consortium of partners led by the Hungarian School Sport Federation and includes Youth Sport Trust International. It was first held in 2015.
