The Bambisanani Partnership developed as a result of the British Council/Youth Sport Trust ‘Dreams and Teams’ initiative, which aimed to use sport as a vehicle to develop cross cultural awareness and leadership skills in young people.
Bambisanani is the Zulu word for “working hand in hand” and perfectly describes the original collaboration between St Mary’s School, Menston in the UK, and Mnyakanya School in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.
Twenty years on, the Partnership is stronger than ever and now involves over 60 schools (primary, secondary, and Special), colleges and universities in both countries. More than 40,000 young people have engaged in various Bambisanani projects, developing confidence and leadership skills.
The Partnership has gained numerous international awards and has been represented at conferences throughout the world.
Youth Sport Trust International is proud to have supported the Partnership through its early years and recognises their outstanding achievements, demonstrating how working together with mutual understanding can benefit the lives of so many.
‘Twenty years is a significant milestone, but it is also an opportunity to look towards the future. I hope that the Bambisanani Partnership will continue to grow, reach may more young people and deepen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between South Africa and the United Kingdom.’ His Excellency Mr Jeremiah Nyamane Mamabolo, High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to the United Kingdom.
“None of this would have happened without the initial support and inspiration of the wonderful Youth Sport Trust team. The initial guiding principles endure today as we continue to develop our partnerships in order to positively impact the lives of young people in both countries.” David Geldart, Founder/Volunteer CEO, The Bambisanani Partnership.
