ACTIONS

Young people opportunity

We have a couple of exciting opportunities for your young people to get involved in:

  • Young people blog - we are looking for young people to write a short blog on their experiences of school sport and physical activity, this may be a good opportunity for some of your inclusive youth leadership young role models
  • Youth Panel Panellists - after the success of the youth panel last year during Inclusion Live we wanted to do another one. So, we have the opportunity for five young people to be part of the session to talk about their leadership journey through school and answer questions from the audience.

If you are interested in any of the opportunities above, please let Roshni know by the end of November.

YST Programme Reporting

All schools should have now received their unique reporting link for this academic year. This will allow you to enter data all year round but there will be certain parts of the year when we will do a data drawdown. A reminder of these dates:

  • 09 December 2022
  • 15 February 2023
  • 31 July 2023

If you have not received reporting information or have any questions please contact Roshni as soon as possible.

SEMH Primary - reaching out

As you all know we come to this network when we require your expert knowledge and advice. With this in mind, we have a request that has come in from a fellow lead inclusion school.

They are looking for advice, support and guidance from our fantastic network around approaches in SEMH which are having a real, lasting, immediate and game-changing impact on pupils really struggling with the SEMH challenge. These do not necessarily have to be PESSPA approaches but might just be innovative or professional practices in our network.

If you do have any responses to the above ask, please send your answers directly to Carolyn Duncan, Headteacher at Orrets Meadow Primary School, Wirral.

UPDATES

Inclusive Youth Leadership

Connection emails between schools and athlete mentors should now have been sent. If you have not received this, please contact Roshni.

The matrix and slides to support the delivery of your Inclusive Youth Leadership event can be found on the Microsoft Teams channel in the files section. If you do have any questions on any of the content, please get in touch with Roshni.

ASK Research Partner Survey

At the end of November, ASK Research will send you the link for this year’s partner survey. This is to find out what schools and others you have worked with as part of Inclusion 2024, think about the project and the effects your support has had on them.

We will send more details with the survey link but hope that Lead Inclusion Schools will send this to everyone they have worked with since the start of this academic year as part of the project. From last year’s responses, we discovered that schools, SGOs and other organisations found that your help meant they felt more confident and able to deliver inclusive PE and school sports and that they really valued the Lead Inclusion School input. It would be great to hear from as many people that you’ve worked with this year as possible. The link will stay live for the rest of the year. More details to follow but do look out for the email from Amy at ASK Research.

Lead Inclusion School Virtual Event

Thanks to those that were able to join us virtually on 12 October during the Lead Inclusion School virtual catch-up, which was for those schools that were unable to attend the face-to-face networking event in September.

If you were unable to attend on the day or want to revisit some of the content, you can watch the session back and access the slides here.

The recording references a number of links, so please follow the links below to view them:

If you have any questions on anything mentioned, please do not hesitate to contact one of the team.

YOUNG PEOPLE IMPACT

This month we want to share some feedback that we received from Athlete Mentor Jade Windley on some young role models she worked with for Step into Sport:

“I just wanted to send you the names of the most inspirational Young Role Models that I have ever worked with on any YST programme, not just Step into Sport.

"Sofia and Elliott both face really tough personal health battles but they shine so brightly and are incredible young people. We spent a lot of time on the half-day visit chatting about their stories. They created amazing story presentations, with Sofia showing a video she created about overcoming bullying for her condition that she made for her charity. Sofia has also designed a logo to raise money for the charity that supports her condition. Sofia put her 'spark' for leadership down to taking part in YST Girls Active in her younger years and being part of the GLAMS squad. She is in Year 11 now and her love for sports leadership is growing all the time, so she was so grateful for the SiS opportunity to be a YRM.

"Elliott also delivered an inspirational presentation and helped me to lead the whole day with humour and confidence. They both were fantastic leaders, leaving the young people totally inspired. It would be so lovely if they could get some recognition at some point, so I appreciate you letting me email you this to try.

We hope reading this helps to demonstrate the impact you can have, not just on young people, but the adults that support them. If you have any stories like this, please send them to Roshni so we can showcase them in future newsletters.

SHARING PRACTICE

Those that were at the September Networking Day would have heard from Jon White who is an Inclusion DC and Inclusion Lead at Clare Mount School mention that he created a Google forms for schools in his county.

Please note that this is not the final version but something schools may want to consider replicating for their county. If you do have any questions, please get in touch with Jon.

"This Inclusion 2024 resource is to help School Games Organisers (SGOs) to meet effectively the Inclusive PE, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of all schools in their area in an efficient and supportive format.

"This resource supports the vision that all young people should have access to inclusive PESSPA in the school curriculum and access to meaningful experiences in their local School Games. SGOs can easily share the resource with their school contacts in their area or school sport partnership. Schools can then share the resource with colleagues at a staff meeting, via email or as a CPD task in directed time using a cascade approach.

"This resource can also be used as a curriculum development tool in all schools with a range of approaches. It is designed to facilitate fun, enjoyable and inclusive activities while also giving staff the confidence and skills to implement their vision of inclusive PESSPA in their schools.

"The Inclusion 2024 CPD resource contains embedded links to inclusive PESSPA webinars, websites, e-learning and staff inclusive PESSPA self-assessment tools (such as the Inclusive 2024 Inclusive Education Hub). The Inclusion 2024 resource also supports the completion of the Inclusive Health Check tool on the School Games dashboards as well as supporting individual staff development and the CPD needs of a cluster of schools or a school sport partnership.

"Please click on the links to access the CPD and resources available through Inclusion 2024."

"Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, Wirral is the Lead Inclusion School for Merseyside for the Youth Sport Trust and funded by the Inclusion 2024 Consortium (The Department for Education, NASEN, British Paralympic Association, Swim England and Activity Alliance) and is led by Jon White (0151 606 9440). Fill out the form here."

Sensory Football

Without the right approach, taking part in sport can sometimes be a passive experience for people with complex disabilities. Sensory Football reimagines the way football is delivered, allowing people with complex disabilities to actively participate in a meaningful way, which allows them to gain all the same benefits of football as anyone else.
By working on adapting football activities and focusing on each participant’s individual outcomes, we can ensure football is person-centered and meaningful for everyone.

You can find videos, resources and information on their website. You can also book free training workshops using the links below:

Sense Active

Sense Active is part of the national disability charity, Sense. The Sense Active team is currently funded by Sport England to help get more disabled people active through their “Sense Active Together” project.

The Sense Active team can provide resources, training and, in some instances, help identify and pay for instructors to deliver sessions. Sense Active has developed a wide range of programmes to help support learners with complex needs such as Sensory Football, Sensory Tennis and Sensory Walks.

Sense has a number of regional coordinators you can get in touch with:
