Youth Sport Trust responds as Lionesses' success spurs government announcement

The Government has today announced new plans to ensure the success of the Lionesses creates a lasting legacy for women and girls in sport.

The announcement includes:

  • A commitment to use the new network of School Sports Partnerships to make sure girls have the same opportunities as boy to play sport at school, as part of the new approach to PE and school sport
  • A new Women’s Sport Taskforce to focus on finding solutions to the challenges facing women and girls in sport
  • A new grants scheme, delivered by the Football Foundation, to create welcoming, safe and accessible facilities for women and girls at existing grassroots sport sites
  • A doubling of the share of primetime slots dedicated to women’s and girl’s teams at Government-funded facilities across England
  • An ambition that by 2035, the UK is a leader in all aspects of women’s and girls’ sport, from the field of play to the boardroom

Commenting on today’s announcement, Youth Sport Trust CEO Ali Oliver MBE said:

“The Lionesses have inspired the nation through their success at the Euros, and they have been leading by example off the pitch, too. Their call for equal access to school sport has resonated across the country and we are pleased the Government has committed to making sure girls have the same opportunities as boys to play sport at school.

“The new network of School Sports Partnerships can bring together schools, local clubs and NGBs to break down barriers to physical activity in schools, including for girls and children with SEND, as part of the Government's new approach to PE and school sport. As the Lionesses have articulated, sport can have a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing and creating opportunities for those at greatest risk of missing out can ensure every child can access the life-changing benefits of play and sport.”
