Multisport Clubs

As part of the Multisport Clubs programme, we are transitioning to a hub-based delivery model across 10 regions. Each hub will be led by a dedicated Hub Manager and will support a cluster of schools to embed the programme’s approach.

Description

This model aims to test the effectiveness of the hub structure, generate valuable insights, and inform future decisions around scaling the programme.

Evidence of need: Current after-school provision is falling short for many young people. Evidence shows that existing offerings do not meet the diverse needs of all children and young people:

  • Fewer than half of all children and young people in England are meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guideline of 60 active minutes per day - with 30% doing less than 30 minutes daily.
  • Since the Covid-19 pandemic, 92% of young people say the way they play has changed.
  • Half report playing outside with friends less often, while 34% say they are playing alone more frequently.
  • One in five parents say their child takes part in no enrichment activities during a typical week - whether in primary or secondary school.
  • Since the London 2012 Olympics, 38% of secondary schools have reduced curriculum time for PE.

What’s involved:

For Hub Managers:

  • Recruit a minimum of 7 schools within their local area
  • Coordinate and support the delivery of a teacher cascade training session within the school cluster
  • Attend a national hub training session (delivered virtually)
  • Lead the development of a hub case study, with support from the Multisport Clubs (MSC) team
  • Support schools with project reporting and ongoing delivery.

For Schools:

  • A member of staff to attend cascade training
  • Train young leaders by October half term 2025
  • Run an after-school Multisport Club for a minimum of 6 weeks
  • Complete project reporting requirements
  • Some schools may also be asked to host a visit and contribute to a case study - with full support from Hub Managers and the Youth Sport Trust (YST).

As part of the programme, there will be online resources available to the teachers and young leaders. There will also be financial support to go towards the running of the clubs. The amount and purpose is still being determined but will be shared when joining the programme.

Outcomes: Young leaders are at the heart of the Multisport Clubs (MSC) programme. Through dedicated leadership training and hands-on experience, they gain the confidence and skills to guide, motivate, and support their peers.

Participants benefit from a fun, inclusive, and varied multisport environment — one designed around their interests. It’s about trying new things, staying active, and feeling a true sense of belonging.

Teachers report that students involved in Multisport Clubs often grow in confidence and re-engage with school life. The programme helps strengthen peer relationships and contributes to a more positive, active school culture.

For your school to take part in this programme you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  •  Secondary school
  • Based in England

Duration: This programme takes place throughout the 2025/26 academic year. The deadline for expressions of interest is 31 January 2026.
