Why it works
Enrichment plays a vital role in improving attendance, boosting confidence, strengthening physical and mental wellbeing, and helping young people feel a sense of belonging in school. High-quality enrichment through sport, the arts, dance, outdoor learning, and wider physical activity provides children with opportunities to discover their passions, achieve personal growth, and thrive beyond the classroom.
The Youth Sport Trust is committed to supporting schools, Multi Academy Trusts, and partners to design and deliver inclusive, impactful enrichment in the context of play, school sport and physical activity that reaches every young person, particularly those who face the greatest barriers.
Enrichment can be defined as ‘referring to a broad range of activities and experiences that support young people’s social, personal, and educational development. These can take place in schools, community settings, or beyond, and may be led by volunteers or paid staff.’
Enrichment has the power to transform the school experience for young people; and school sport and physical activity are some of the most impactful ways to make that happen.
For example, a report from the Education Policy Institute found that children who attended sport clubs were more likely to be in education or employment as young adults and extra-curricular enrichment participation is associated with higher educational achievement and positive outcomes in adulthood.
The Youth Sport Trust can support schools to build an enrichment offer that strengthens attendance, supports wellbeing, and inspires young people to get active and get involved.
