What will I gain from being a Team Leader?

As a Team Leader, you’ll develop loads of transferable skills including communication, leadership, teamwork, and event delivery. You’ll gain confidence, experience, and a national network of likeminded peers. You’ll also play a part in something meaningful, supporting young people to be the best they can be. Plus, it’s fun! You’ll make new friends, have new experiences, and build your CV at the same time.

What kind of things will I do as a Team Leader?

Team Leaders are part of the delivery team at certain YST events. Some of the things you’ll do include:

  • Supporting the delivery of national events like the School Games National Finals or leadership residentials
  • Helping younger leaders and young people build confidence and get involved in physical activity
  • Acting as a role model and representing Youth Sport Trust at various activities
  • Capturing and sharing content from events to celebrate and promote the work of YST
  • Contributing your ideas to shape the Team Leader programme for the future

How much time do I need to commit?

The Team Leader programme is a two year programme. We’re flexible and know you may have uni, work, or other commitments. Generally, we’ll ask for:

  • Attendance at residentials and training weekends (usually two per year)
  • Participation in at least one YST delivery opportunity per year, such as a leadership camp or a School Games event

There will also be other ad hoc events that come up throughout the year. We’ll always give you notice and options, and we understand if sometimes you have to say no.

Do I need to pay anything towards the programme?

Nope! All costs are covered, including travel, accommodation, food, and activities. If you need to travel to an event, we’ll either arrange your travel for you or reimburse any agreed costs.

How will I travel to YST events?

Travel arrangements will vary depending on the event and your location. Sometimes we’ll book train tickets or accommodation for you, other times, we’ll reimburse travel if you’re driving. We’ll always make sure you know what’s happening ahead of time and can talk through anything you’re unsure about.

What kind of support will I get as a Team Leader?

You’ll be supported by a friendly team of YST staff as well as a peer group of Team Leaders. Whether it’s your first event or your fifth, we’ll be there to guide you through it. We also know that everyone learns and works differently, so if you have any specific needs or access requirements, we’ll work with you to make sure you feel confident and supported throughout.
