YST supports petition to make PE a core subject

The Youth Sport Trust is pleased to lend its support to a recent government petition, created by councillor Eartha Pond, to make PE a core subject, with a minimum of two hours allocated weekly, across Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5.

The petition, which cites research conducted by the Trust, correctly states that 38% of secondary schools have cut PE time since 2014 for children aged between 14-16 amid the pressure of exams and core subjects. We strongly agree that this needs to change due to the association between exercise and both physical and mental wellbeing.

Ms. Pond, who is a parish councillor for London's First Community/Parish Council (Queen’s Park Council), has worked with the Trust in the past. In 2017 we supported her by raising awareness of community initiatives on social media, including a football tournament which she organised, raising money for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. We admire her passion for the importance of sport and physical education and fully commend her efforts with this petition.
