Being a Team Leader

I learned about the YST Team Leader programme through Mandy Newbold, who was working in my university’s sports department. She shared information about the opportunity, which sparked my interest in applying. I became a team leader to gain valuable experience in the sports industry and to make a positive impact on the younger generation. I'm passionate about using sport as a tool for personal growth and development. This role allows me to support and inspire others on their journey.

Since becoming a team leader, I've learned that leadership comes in many forms and there is no single way to be a valuable asset to a team. You don’t need to be the loudest or the most extroverted to make a meaningful impact. Authenticity, initiative, and a willingness to support others are just as important. I’ve realised that being true to yourself, leading with integrity, and fostering a collaborative environment are key to making a positive difference. Every team member brings unique strengths, and embracing these differences is what makes a team successful.

Quick Fire Questions

Who is your role model and why?

My role model has always been my mom. Her work ethic, determination, and compassion are qualities I deeply admire and have shaped me into the person I am today. She pushes me each day to be my best, work hard regardless of the task, and always act with integrity - even when no one is watching. She has been my biggest supporter, and I draw strength and courage from her. I truly couldn’t have pursued this study abroad experience without her unwavering belief in me.

If you could do any sport, what would it be and why?

I would take part in Cheese Rolling. Since coming to the UK, I have learned about this niche sport, and I think it is absolutely hilarious. I have a very competitive ego, and I believe I would win 100% - without breaking anything.
