YST Ruth Owen-Evans

Sport: Cross Country Mountain Biking, Cross Triathlon

How did you get into sport?

I tried mountain biking properly for the first time when I went to university. I wasn't sporty at school, so it was great to finally find a sport that I loved. I used to cycle to school and enjoyed the freedom of being able get to places without needing to rely on my parents for a lift all the time, but I had no idea what opportunities existed in mountain biking until I was into my twenties.  Mountain biking really appealed to me as I love being outdoors and surrounded by nature and fresh air.

What are your three biggest achievements in sport?

  •  Two time Welsh National Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion
  •  2018 World Cross Triathlon Championships AG Silver medallist
  •  2015 UK, European and European Tour AG Xterra Champion.

When and why did you get involved with the Athlete Mentor programme?

I come from a less 'traditional' background in sport and love having the opportunity to talk to young people about what they can achieve if they put their minds to it, even if they aren't sporty or particularly academic they still have strengths and can learn so much about themselves when they push themselves.

What has been your favourite moment as a YST Athlete Mentor?

Working with less confident young people who don't generally get involved in sessions and seeing them come out of their comfort zone and try something for the first time.
