Mental health charity Mind has today released new research, billed as the biggest of its kind, which confirms the benefits of physical activity to mental wellbeing.

Mental health charity Mind has today released new research, billed as the biggest of its kind, which confirms the benefits of physical activity to mental wellbeing.

The research has been carried out as part of its Go Set to Go Programme, launched with the support of Sport England and the National Lottery.

The Youth Sport Trust (YST) is a member of Mind's Sport and Mental Health Advisory Network.

Responding to the research, Chris Wright, Head of Wellbeing at YST, said:

This insightful research from Mind makes a powerful case for the wider benefits of physical activity on health and wellbeing.

We are passionate about the power of sport and physical activity to improve young lives. From our work in schools across the country through programmes like Get Exam Fit and Active in Mind we see first-hand the positive impact that physical activity has on emotional, mental and social wellbeing. At a time when children's mental health is in decline, it has never been more important to get them active.

"As a member of Sport and Mental Health Advisory Network we will be continuing our work with Mind and other partners to help people with mental health problems benefit from being more active. I would urge anyone involved in sport, health or education to read this research and act on its findings.
