YST responds to 2017 Spring Budget

Wednesday saw the Chancellor share the spring budget which included confirmation that the Government will fund the Department for Education with £1 billion under the Soft Drink Industry Levy, funding school sport and healthy eating, despite falls in the expected yield of the levy due to product reformation.

Alison Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust said:

The budget brought positive news for PE and school sport.  Not only does the confirmation of the £1 billion to fund school sport and healthy living programmes over the life of the current parliament provide long term funding which should drive innovation of PE and school sport so it is fit for this generation, but the narrative also reflects the ‘call to action’ we have been championing in terms of PE as a legitimate vehicle to improve young people’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

The Youth Sport Trust is determined to do all it can through our solutions, learning and networks, to ensure this funding  brings transformational change which lasts long after the proposed investment period.

The funding will be invested into schools through the Department for Education. Read more here (see section 4.8)
