BLOG: How we are giving pupils a positive start to the day

Anna Sullivan, Acting Deputy Headteacher at Cardwell Primary School in Woolwich, blogs about how extra funding through the Primary PE and sport premium is ensuring her pupils get a healthy and happy start to the day.
Primary PE and school sport funding will transform PE in school

We think it is crucial for our pupils to start the day through being active. The extra government funding will see around £19,000 pumped into our PE and sport offering.

Last year we used the funding to organise early morning sports clubs to give pupils a positive start to the day and give them additional opportunities to take part in sport and be more physically active.

Pupils showed improved learning, punctuality and attendance as a result and developed healthy eating habits and increased their social development.

Now we will be able to employ a PE teaching assistant to offer additional support to pupils and staff in PE lessons, lead sports activities during playtimes, and offer additional extra-curricular sports activity. Our swimming provision will be further enhanced with booster sessions so that all pupils leave the school being able to swim.

It really will make all the difference to our 490 children. The premium has always benefitted all pupils, but this year they will have additional opportunities to develop in a wider range of activities and skills.

The legacy that the extra funding will provide would not have been possible on this scale without the doubling of the PE premium. We plan to achieve better physical literacy through the up skilling of our teachers and develop their confidence in delivering sport.
