Nine years ago I was sat in a pedagogy lecture wondering what I was going to do with my life, what do you do with a Chemistry and Sport Science degree?! At the end of the lecture we had a presentation from the Youth Sport Trust on an opportunity to volunteer at their Step into Sport camp. I was shy and couldn’t have dreamt of anything scarier than applying for such an opportunity but I just decided to give it a go. I can remember the promo video so clearly; the smiling young faces, the incredible journeys they had gone on through camp, the power of sport - and I just knew it was something so special.
I attended the Step into Sport Camp and the experiences that followed have shaped me immeasurably. I now work for the Youth Sport Trust and some six years on after that first camp, I manage a team and have been selected to chair our Youth Board. I applied for this position because I know young people have creative, insightful and mature views, and I want to make sure they are central to our decision making as an organisation.
Our Youth Board will be positioned at the heart of our organisation representing and communicating the views of all young people to inform and enhance our work. It will give a voice to young people from every corner of society.
The opportunity to chair our Youth Board is so exciting for me; it allows me to give the chance I had to others. But it’s not a lift to success - it’s just the first hand hold on a challenging climb. What I have learnt is that the rest is down to you, to grab that opportunity and make the most of it. Who knows where it might take you?
If you are interested in becoming a member of our Youth Board you can find out more and apply here. Good luck!
