Learning & Discovery Personal Challenge Days

This project will see 20 primary, secondary and special schools across England organise inclusive countywide ‘Learning and Discovery’ Challenge Days ahead of summer 2021. This innovation project is part of the Inclusion 2020 programme, funded by the Department for Education.

At the events, pupils of all abilities will experience a variety of Para sports and get the opportunity to compete. The Learning and Discovery days will focus on inspiring pupils with and without SEND to play and enjoy unified sport together; challenging attitudes and perceptions of disabilities.

This year, the Youth Sport Trust (in partnership with Lead Inclusion Schools, NGBs and inclusion specialists) have developed three resources to support young peoples engagement.

These include:

  • Individual / Personal Challenge Days that can be done in school or at home
  • Small Group activities that can be completed with a sibling/parent at home or with friends in school
  • Larger groups or Mass Participation either in school or at a central location i.e Sports Hall.

You can download them from the right-hand side of this page. Within the resources we have identified four key sports to engage young people in inclusive activities – New Age Kurling, Athletics, Seated Volleyball and Badminton.

Below, you will find Opening, Welcome and Closing videos from Kate Grey, Inclusion 2020 Athlete Ambassador and Paralympic Swimmer which can be used throughout your festivals, whether you are at home or in school.

You can also watch four sport-specific video guides from Kate via the links below:

And for parents, teachers, coaches and young leaders, you will find a couple of 'How To' videos on the right-hand side of this page, from Ken Black, Inclusion Specialist on how to use the resources at home or in school.
