Post Title:   Competition Manager

Hours:    37 hours per week

Salary:   £24,403 – £26,666

Contract:  full time until March 2011

Location:   Frenchay Campus, UWE.


Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), the new post holder will join an established team of four Competition Managers hosted by the West of England Sport Trust. The role of Competition Manager is to work with the School Sport Partnership network to develop, influence and deliver inter-school competition in line with the National Competition Framework.

This challenging role will require a good understanding and practical knowledge of working within schools, school sport partnerships and/or community sport settings. With experience of partnership working and the ability to instigate change to improve the number and quality of competitive opportunities within school sport and linked to community sport.

Background to Competition Manager Network

The National Competition Framework was developed by the Youth Sport Trust, Sport England, the National Council for School Sport and National Governing Bodies with a vision to create:
"A world class system for school aged competition that provides both opportunities for all young people regardless of their ability, and recognised pathways to develop their talents."

A Competition Manager infrastructure has now been established across all 49 county areas in England to deliver the National Competition Framework. Wesport employs a team of 5 Competition Managers (CM's) with a clear vision to “Provide the opportunity for ALL young people to compete for their school and realise their potential”;
- Increase participation in high quality competition
- Broaden the range of competitive opportunities for all
- Develop structured, consistent and progressive competitive pathways

The role of the Competition Manager team is to:
• Provide the strategic lead for competition and engage with a range of local partners including National Governing Bodies of sport, school associations, clubs, coaches, teachers and SSP staff (PDM's, SSCo's and PLTs).
• Manage and co-ordinate the planning and implementation of school competition programmes
• Complement and develop existing provision, building on good practice, ensuring that the competition programme links with other programmes and fits into the wider context.
Each Wesport Competition Manager is responsible for a geographical area within Wesport, including two School Sport Partnerships at either primary or secondary school level.


WEST OF ENGLAND SPORT TRUST (Wesport)

The West of England Sport Trust (Wesport) host and employ the Competition Manager team on behalf of the eight SSP's in the area. Wesport is a registered charity that works as a network of organisations in the West of England to promote lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

Wesport has over 50 member organisations from local authorities to HE/FE establishments, National Governing Bodies of Sport, and the school sport partnerships. There is a core team of 12 staff based at the University of the West of England (UWE). The core teams' main aim is to work to strengthen this network and improve the quality and quantity of opportunities for the communities to engage in sport and physical activity. Key areas of work include the development of sporting competition in schools, development of the workforce and delivery of national sport and physical activity initiatives.
