Specialism Impact

Students in Science lessonThe Youth Sport Trust has a Specialism Impact team to work strategically to provide whole school improvement support for Sports Colleges and Academies with a focus on sport.

This team has been developing strategies and programmes focusing on how the specialism can raise achievement and attainment of young people.  It works particularly in the areas of:

  • How the specialism can raise achievement in curriculum areas other than PE – including the core subjects (English, Maths and Science) and Languages.
  • How the specialism can raise achievement and contribute to the Every Child Matters and Extended Schools agendas.
  • How schools within the network can be linked together to support one another.

Work over the past year

Core subjects
We have continued to look at new and innovative ways of using PE and sport to raise achievement in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. Highlights this year have included a series of workshops delivered across the country, the publication of Raising your Game and the roll-out of Sharing the Challenge case study cards.

Languages
This year we launched a new programme designed to support Sports Colleges and Academies in raising the uptake and achievement in languages. A number of Sports Colleges, such as Ivybridge Community College in Devon and The Manor School in Nottinghamshire, have developed Young Leaders that work with local primary schools to deliver learning opportunities in languages. For other great ideas, log into the Xchange Plus to look at our online case studies.

Every Child Matters
We are working with key national partners to develop strategies to inform and exemplify good practice in how sport and PE can contribute to the Every Child Matters and Extended Schools agendas. A range of development projects and networks have been set up that focus on issues such as family learning, underachievers and young disabled people.
