Playground Development

playground developmentThe Youth Sport Trust has been working in the area of Playground Development since 2000.  The Trust has provided schools, Local Education Authorities, School Sport Partnerships and their partners with support, key information, evidence, tools and case studies to support the development of playgrounds across the country.

“The playground is a much healthier and active place to be, with the children more focused on structured purposeful play,” Primary Link Teacher

Existing tools to support schools with playground development include:

  • The complete Primary Playground Development Resource Pack - which has everything a primary school might need to begin, run and maintain the process of development of their playground including playground games suggestions.
  • A Guide to Primary Playground Development. This includes 10 practical and simple tips that schools can use to improve their playgrounds using the Zoneparc concept at minimal cost.
  • A Playground Leadership Resource to support with ideas and advocacy around introducing various Playground Leadership schemes run by School Sport Partnerships (now included in the Primary Playground Development pack)
  • The Outdoor Classroom – a resource to encourage and support schools with the ongoing use of the playground as an outdoor classroom for learning and developing.  Includes a DVD with new playground games and a music CD for the playground.
  • A Primary Schools Playground Resource Box – which includes four inspiring resources to support learning and developing through playground games, activity sessions and using your outdoor classroom
  • A Secondary School Playgrounds Development Resource – which explores the principles of developing the playground and shares tried and tested ideas from a variety of secondary schools involved with the Personal Best Challenge Park project.

The Youth Sport Trust has also pioneered the development of the Zoneparc programme within Primary Schools and the Personal Best Challenge Park pilot within Secondary schools.
