Numbers, Outcomes and role of the YA
The Young Ambassador programme outcomes are as follows:
- To advocate the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement;
- To champion sport within local communities;
- To create role models for other young people;
- To aspire to inspire participation.
Numbers of YAs
- Two YAs per 449 SSPs (898 in total across England), plus two mentor YAs (last years YAs) (830 in total across England);
- 50% of the Young Ambassadors are selected due to their ‘performance’ in Sport (gifted and talented), and 50% due to their commitment and ability as a Leader and Volunteer;
- Each school Sport Partnership is to select one G&T YA and one Leader and Volunteer YA;
- Young Ambassadors are between 14-18 years old and undertake the role for a two year period.
Young Ambassador Role:
In their first year the young people selected will have a role as Young Ambassadors. There role focuses on three areas:
- Increase participation and healthy living of other young people;
- Promoting HQ learning in PE and Sport and across other subjects through the Olympic and Paralympic ideas/values;
- Promote the 2012 Games.
Mentor Young Ambassador Role:
The second year (2008-09) they will be mentors for Young Ambassadors. There role will focus on three areas:
- To build the process for the selection of next years YAs;
- To build capacity of other young people through mentoring (i.e of year 1 YAs) and supporting others;
- To undertake the YA role on a local, county, regional & national level (i.e use on National platforms, YST to consult with year 2 YAs frequently etc).
Resources for Young Ambassadors
- Memory stick – containing contents of Filofax plus DVDs, presentations etc;
- Accreditation with Photo ID;
- Business cards (100 per YA);
- Key messages postcard;
- T -shirt ;
- Conference workbook ;
- Clear plastic "Olympic style" wallet and lanyard.
All to be given to YAs at the Conference
Mentor Young Ambassadors
- Mentor Young Ambassadors will have a network opportunity. The network opportunities will take place in 16 areas across England;
- A resource is being developed to support Mentor YAs to undertake their role.
