National School Sport Week diary

Dame Kelly HolmesDame Kelly Holmes keeps us up-to-date on National School Sport Week as she visits schools and events all over the country.

Monday 30 June

Today I started my journey at 7am to vist the first school on my week long trip to celebrate National School Sport Week.

First visit: Imberhorne School  in West Sussex
Their theme for the week is ‘International Activities Week’ - they’ve organised a mini-Olympics doing sports such as Korfball, Rounders, Lacrosse, Handball and a relay race on the athletics track.

Activities Week aims to introduce the students to new and exciting sports from around the world, and the International theme reminds them of their role and responsibility as global citizens in the world of sport and the world of work.

The school also celebrates the Olympics in Beijing with 32 of their students preparing to go on a trip of a life-time.

I arrived at 8.00am met by the Head teacher John Ford, PE Teachers and pupils and the Mayoress of East Grinstead.

First thing to do was some live TV for Setanta Sport and The BBC news channel, featuring 20 students playing netball.

At 9.30am I received a warm welcome in the main hall from a group of  students taking part in International Sports Day and I officially declared International Activities Week opened!

I held a Q session with 32 students who will go to Beijing in August and I joined in the activities at the Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA).Playing Korfball, a game that is quite like netball, which was fun.

I was given a special glass presentation from the school and then I left the school at 10.30am to start on my next journey to the venue Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre.

Second visit: Stevenage School Sports Partnership
Which was held at the Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, with six schools involved: Marriotts Sports College, The Nobel school, The Barnwell School, John Henry Newman School, The Valley School and The Barclay School.

I arrived at 12.30pm and was welcomed by the Partnership Ambassadors and Partnership Development Managers.  They organised a Girls Multi-Activity Event with 12 different activities and sports, led by Community Club Coaches and sports leaders.

Sports included: netball, football, cricket, basketball, athletics, rythmic gym, street dance, boxercise, hoola-hooping, fit balls, trampoline, badminton, tennis, bowls and mobile team challenge.  I had a go at a few of them which was slightly embarrassing and I am sure my street cred went right down!

I really enjoyed meeting everyone and I am very pleased to see how a School Sport Partnership is working together. I left the leisure centre at 2.30pm to go to the next stop and last visit of the day: Roade School and Sports College. The theme of the day is School Sport and Club Links Celebration Day.
