Sports Colleges can use the Specialism of Sport to help raise the profile of languages, motivate learners, increase the uptake of languages at Key Stage 4 and therefore support the National Languages Strategy.
The National Languages Strategy is gaining momentum, so much so that from September 2008, a school will have two separate performance indicators to report in the Key Stage 4 Achievement and Attainment tables. The first indicator will show the percentage of the student cohort who have achieved a full GCSE A* - C (level 2) and the second indicator will show the percentage who have achieved the equivalent of a short course at Level 1.
The Sports Colleges area includes an extensive languages section to help schools use the specialism of sport to impact on language learning and support in working towards the Government Benchmark of between 50% - 90% take up at Key Stage 4.
