Youth Sport Trust Corporate Partner - Sainsbury's

Dame Kelly Holmes at the launch of TOP Activity

As part of its corporate partner programme, the Youth Sport Trust has developed an exciting partnership with Sainsbury's.

We were delighted to support the new Sainsbury’s Active Kids campaign for 2008, which encouraged children to become more active and healthy.

Sainsbury's Active Kids has already delivered £52 million of sports equipment to over 31,000 UK schools and nurseries and is back for its fourth year on 14th February!

TOP Activity

As part of its commitment to encourage young people to become more active, Sainsbury’s continues to support TOP Activity. TOP Activity is a new and exciting programme, offering alternative out-of-school hours activities to 7 – 11 year olds. It is designed to reach those young people who might not be accessing physical activity through traditional routes, to help increase their participation in sport and exercise.

The programme comprises training, resources and equipment and the activities are grouped under four exciting themes:

Xpress Yourself
e.g. dance, jive, salsa, cheerleading, martial fitness

Xpress YourselfXpress Highs
e.g. skipping, hula, oppy relays, wake ‘n’ shake, circuits

Xtra Time
e.g. small-sided games, parachute, Frisbee

Xtreme Challenges
e.g. circus moves, tri-golf, rock-it-ball

TOP Activity has been running in such diverse sites as an Afro-Caribbean club in Gloucestershire and a summer Whizz Kids scheme in Haringey. Sites are also up and running in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

TOP Activity takes on new partners

Research has shown that a Youth Sport Trust, MEND and Sainsbury’s project, which encourages children and their families to take up healthy eating and get active, has significant benefits for the children involved.

Achievements and aims

2006/2007
We are rolling out the TOP Activity programme across 600 sites in the UK. This involves close work and roll out with School Sports Partnerships, who in turn target a range of local sites to engage those hard to reach young people. Activity is delivered either on school or community sites and led by a wide range of deliverers, for example Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Dinner Supervisors, Volunteers, Coaches, Young Leaders etc. The range of targeted young people, deliverers and settings reinforce the flexibility of the programme and its ability to meet a range of needs presented by those young people who, traditionally, do not participate in sport.

2007/2008
The programme will target a further 500 sites across the UK and provide training and resources to increase physical activity amongst those hard to reach young people.
