What does a Zoneparc playground look like?

Each school's playground is redesigned into three colour-coded, fun activity zones.  Zoning the playground in this way provides space for all children to have the opportunity to get active and play in a safe and fun way.

A typical Zoneparc playground looks like the one below.  Use the reference numbers to find out what each area is about.

“I like the boogie box because I can sing and dance on the stage with my friends”.  Year 3 pupil

  1. The red zone - This is a court area and is designed for more traditional sporting activities, like rugby, football, tennis, cricket, netball, hockey and basketball.

  2. The blue zone - This is for multi-skill activities, like running, hopping, balancing, skipping, target and pairs work. Children can play with equipment on their own or within a group.

  3. The yellow zone - This is the chill-out zone. It provides an area for quiet play, shading and seating.

  4. Stage and music – More and more schools are introducing music and theatre into the playground as part of the blue zone.

  5. The ‘heart line’ – This is the orange line that runs around the playground. It links all three zones together and can be used for fun, health and fitness activities.

  6. Equipment storage shed – Arange of traditional and innovative sports equipment and resources are used within the playground and stored outside for specific playground use and easy accessibility. Equipment management – schools adopt their own system to mange the equipment which is vital to the day-to-day running of the playground.

  7. Development and Training – Young people, staff, supervisors and parents are involved with the planning and design of the playground to ensure ownership of the development throughout. Lunchtime supervisors and support staff receive training on the day-to-day running of the playground.  A number of pupils are also appointed as ‘Zoneparc leaders’. Their role is to take on responsibilities and help organise activities in the playground.
