TOP Sportsability

TOP Sportsability is a unique inclusive activities programme developed by the Youth Sport Trust in partnership with National Governing Bodies of Sport. Schools can use the programme to help engage young disabled people in PE and school sport, supporting their first step into School Games activity.

The key aims of TOP Sportsability are:

• To provide a vehicle for the inclusion of disabled and non-disabled young people in physical activity and sport;

• To suggest specific ideas and strategies to support the inclusion of young people who have significant special needs and impairments;

• To provide a basic introduction to a range of sports, including three Paralympic sports, in support of the School Games programme.

How is the programme accessed?

TOP Sportsability has been developed by Youth Sport Trust and supported by Dept of Education and Sport England.  It is a FREE online resource which provides advice and guidance for teachers and other professionals supporting young disabled people to access School Sport and Physical Education.  This resource provides video clips and downloadable content including activity cards for a range of inclusive activities and sports.

An Introductory DVD is available for every secondary/special school in England and will be distributed from the end of January.  The DVD will include an overview of Project Ability and TOP Sportsability including a tutorial on how to register and use the FREE TOP Sportsability online resource to support Schools to engage more disabled young people in school sport opportunities and transition into School Games Activity.
