The PE & Sport Strategy for Young People – Driving demand for the five hour offer

school sportTwo years on from the announcement of the expanded PE and Sport Strategy for Young People, great progress has been made in laying the foundations to offer all young people access to five hours a week of high-quality PE and sport.

The Youth Sport Trust and Sport England are working with the government to share information on how best to achieve the shared long-term ambition to increase participation amongst all young people. In order to achieve an increase in take-up of the offer by every young person, the focus is increasingly on ensuring that young people have access to a five hour offer which is tailored to them.

The latest piece of work is a toolkit designed to provide sports deliverers in school and community networks with advice and communications materials to help promote sporting activity at a local level and drive demand and take-up for these activities amongst young people themselves, particularly those who are partially engaged or 'semi-sporty'.

The campaign identity created for the toolkit is based around the core idea 'Get into it' and uses the look of an internet video channel with a simple message – stop watching and try it out for yourself.

The toolkit features a series of poster, flyer and leaflet templates designed to carry the message to the target audience, tips on how to overcome the barriers to participation and case studies of outstanding projects from around the country. The toolkit is primarily aimed at those working in School Sport Partnerships, County Sport Partnerships, National Governing Bodies, clubs and community providers, local authorities and Primary Care Trusts.

The toolkit is also accompanied by a new web page on direct.gov which has updated information and links for young people and parents looking for information about what sports they can take part in locally, and offering a one-stop-shop starting point for anyone looking to get started in taking up a sport or activity.
