Most wanted Christmas presents

Bicycles and trampolines top the wish lists for young people when it comes to the sporting equipment they would most like to receive for Christmas – new research conducted on behalf of the Youth Sport Trust has found.
More than one in five boys (21%) are hoping to wake up to a new bike on Christmas Day while nearly one in three girls (29%) want a trampoline to be waiting for them when they get up on the big day.
Alongside bikes and trampolines, football kits, trainers and dance equipment also featured highly on the lists. The full lists are as follows:
Boys Top 5:
- Bike
- Football kit, boots etc
- Sports computer game
- Trainers
- Snooker/pool table
Girls Top 5:
- Trampoline
- Trainers
- Dance equipment
- Bike
- Coaching lessons
We work with a range of athletes who are mentors and ambassadors for young people and visit schools to motivate and inspire them to take up sport. The following sporting equipment was on their Christmas wish lists when they were younger:
Olympic Gold Medallist sprinter, Darren Campbell: Football boots
Olympic Gold Medallist sprinter, Jason Gardener: BMX
Olympic Silver Medallist badminton player, Gail Emms: Black racing bike
Olympic Silver Medallist sailor, Joe Glanfield: Tennis racket
Paralympic swimming Gold Medallist, Sascha Kindred: Mountain bike and skateboard
Alison Oliver, Director of Sport at the Youth Sport Trust, said:
“Many of us can cast our minds back to the excitement of waking up to a sporting present on Christmas Day and then going to the park or garden to try them out. For some young people receiving sporting equipment is a great way to get them more active, whilst for others it could be the very first step on a ladder to a successful career in sport.”
