Tips of the week

Monday, 1 June 2009

Joe GlanfieldIn the run up to Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, the Youth Sport Trust talks to some of sport’s biggest stars to get their tips and advice. This week we speak to Olympic silver medallist and YST School Sport Ambassador Joe Glanfield.

YST: What advice would you give to a young person thinking about trying a new sport?

JG: Just go for it and get stuck in don't worry about whether you are good or bad at it. People are hardly ever good at new sports straightaway. It just takes time and practice. There are so many different sports out there I genuinely think there is a sport that is right for everyone.

YST: What encouragement would you give to a young person who is starting to train more seriously in a chosen sport?

JG: Set yourself measurable goals and then think what the key steps are on the way to this goal. If you are training hard to a high level you will have days where you don't feel very confident or motivated but just remember that end goal and how great it would be to achieve it.

YST: How would you encourage someone who isn’t sporty to take part in Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week?

JG: There are so many different sports out there I genuinely think there is a sport that is right for everyone, have a look what sports are on offer and see if one appeals. If you are worried about the competition then just do it for fun, the most important thing is to just give it a go.

YST: What will your Sports Pledge be for Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week?

JG: There are so many sports I would love to try but I am always busy sailing. My Sports pledge is to try a sport I have never tried before.

Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week takes place from 29 June to 3 July 2009.
