Young athletes become STARS
Wednesday 18 November 2009
Today sixty talented young people from across the country are meeting with athlete role models including Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis, as part of our STARS programme.
The training day will enable young athletes to build squad identity and learn more about themselves and their peers, as well as get an insight into what it takes to be the best. Following an opening ceremony, they will engage in a physical warm up session led by elite athlete mentors Michelle Robinson, Baz Moffat and Debbie Flood. They will then meet Denise Lewis and “Move to the Beat” in a performance workshop aimed at discovering the rhythms of different sports and athletes, with a view to understanding how this can enhance their performance.
After a tour of Loughborough University campus, where the event is being held, the young athletes will participate in a performance workshop with Paralympic gold medallist Tim Prendergast and question how they can reach their full potential before learning about sports nutrition with Commonwealth gold medallist Craig Heap
Before the day is brought to an end with a special closing ceremony, the young people will have the chance to pitch for an athlete mentor for the day to continue to inspire them on their journey to success.
Our STARS (Supporting Talented Athletes on the Road to Success) Squad programme works with schools that have clusters of exceptionally talented young athletes and helps them to create squads which will nurture their young athletes and offer them the best chance of realising their potential.
