Day 4 of Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week
Thursday, 2 July 2009
Year three pupils from six primary schools in Oxford are today meeting Olympic gold medallist and Youth Sport Trust School Sport Ambassador Denise Lewis as part of their celebrations for Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week.
350 pupils across Oxford are taking part in activities at Oxford University Sports Department, the home of the very first sub four minute mile. Pupils will compete in their school teams in activities such as 60 meter sprints, 600 meter mini-marathon, long jump, high jump, tennis and mixed relays.
Margaret Stevens, Partnership Development Manager, said:
“Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is a great way of engaging children with sport and the pupils here from the local primaries have been inspired by Denise Lewis’ visit. Incorporating the Olympic Games into Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will enable us to make London 2012 relevant to the children and parents in our community and increase pupil’s enthusiasm for sport both in and out of school.”
Elsewhere today, Olympic triple jump record holder Jonathan Edwards and Youth Sport Trust School Sport Ambassador Gail Emms are visiting Langdon Sports College in London. Staff and pupils are celebrating 10 years of Sports College status and showcasing a range of sporting activities. Gail and Jonathan will be presenting awards to Year 7 and Year 8 students.
Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week runs from 29 June to 3 July 2009 and will inspire millions of young people in more than 10,000 schools across the country to take part in more sport. The initiative supports the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People.
