National School Sport Week hits Scotland
Thursday, 18 March 2010
School Sport Ambassador Darren Campbell joined pupils at Firrhill High School in Edinburgh to launch the inaugural Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week, taking place from 7-11 June 2010.
Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week, being delivered in partnership with sportscotland, uses this unique opportunity to harness the power of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire young people across Scotland to take part in a weeklong celebration of sport and physical activity in schools.
Part of the biggest school sporting event in the UK, the programme will run alongside the Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week in England and Wales. The concept was created by the Youth Sport Trust and in 2009, over 10,500 schools and three million children took part.
Darren Campbell, said: ‘The Olympics have had a massive impact on my life, not just as a competitor but right from an early age when watching the Los Angeles Games inspired me to take up athletics. The Games can have a positive effect on everyone so I’m thrilled to be supporting Bank of Scotland and sportscotland as they bring National School Sport Week to Scotland. I challenge as many schools as possible to sign up to this great opportunity and plan activities that fuel young people’s enthusiasm for sport. What a great way for them to experience Olympic or Paralympic sport for the first time and hopefully discover a new talent they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.'
School registration is now open. All primary and secondary schools in Scotland can register to receive a planning pack and activity pack by visiting the Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week website. The website also features lots of examples and ideas to ensure the whole school can get involved.
Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week in England and Wales runs from 28 June to 2 July 2010
