Coaching in action

Friday, 3 July 2009

Pupils from across Sheffield will today meet Olympic diver Nick Robinson-Baker as part of their celebration around Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week - an initiative that is using the power of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire more young people across Britain to do more sport.

To celebrate Lloyds TSB National School Sport week, 150 pupils from schools within the Links School Sport Partnership will take part in a special sports coaching event involving swimming, cheerleading, athletics, cycling, basketball, rowing, multi-skills and bouldering.  Nick Robinson-Baker, who competed at the Beijing Olympics and is a world diving series gold medallist, will be joined by diving coach Adam Sotheran, both will share their experiences of coaching at an elite level.

The event, at the U Sport Goodwin Sports Complex, is celebrating the School Sport Coaching Programme and Recruit into Coaching, a joint initiative between the Youth Sport Trust and Sport England, which is an element of the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People and aims to recruit and deploy 10,000 new volunteer coaches by 2011.  5,680 of the coaches will be delivered through the network of Sports Colleges/School Sport Partnerships (school setting) and 4,320 through the network of County Sport Partnerships (community setting).

Nick Robinson-Baker said; “The sporting journey for many Olympians and Paralympians begins at school. It’s a crucial period for a young athlete’s development and I hope that by bringing London 2012 into classrooms, Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will inspire our next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.  The celebration of coaching here today as part of the week is great, as having a good coach has been instrumental to the success I have enjoyed so far in diving.”

Sarah Williams, Partnership Development Manager for the Links School Sport Partnership, said: "Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is a great way of engaging children with sport and the pupils who are here as part of the Links School Sport Partnership have been inspired by Nick Robinson-Baker's visit. Incorporating the Olympic Games into Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will enable us to make London 2012 relevant to the children and parents in our community and increase pupil's enthusiasm for sport both in and out of school."
