Sky Living For Sport winners

Darren Campbell with winnersPassion, belief and dreams all came to fruition at the fourth annual Sky Living For Sport awards.

Ninety special guests came together in London’s West End on Tuesday to celebrate the successes of some of the people involved in the Sky Living For Sport scheme which uses the power of sport to engage young people.

There were six categories, three for schools involved in the scheme and three for individuals and our fantastic winners were…

Sky Living For Sport Sustainability Award

  • Bronze winner, Idsall School and Sports College, Telford for using Sky Living For Sport to deliver a significant and sustained impact on whole school issues.
  • Silver winner, Copleston High School, Ipswich for creating new and sustainable opportunities for students with a range of special needs and challenging behaviours
  • Gold winner , Wexham School, Slough for not only ensuring the pupils taking part in the scheme benefit but also the whole school.

Sky Living For Sport Communication Award

  • Bronze Winner, Moorhead Sports College, Accrington, who made a DVD showing an overview of their programme, the student activities and the progress they had made.
  • Silver Winner, Wexham School, Slough has a Sky Living for Sport newsletter produced by pupils and the lead teacher, providing information to community partners and parents about the project.
  • Gold Winner, Redden Court School, Romford who employ a range of media to communicate the scheme including, assemblies, features in the school magazine and coverage in local newspapers.

Sky Living For Sport Partnership Awards

  • Bronze Winner, William Beamont Community High School & Sports College, Warrington for working efficiently together in partnership with other schools in the area.
  • Silver Winner, West Gate Community College, Newcastle who worked across their School Sport Partnership to introduce the new sport of Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Gold Winner Budmouth Technology College, Weymouth who trained students to coach basketball and other activity sessions and then went onto deliver practical sessions to users of the Southill Centre, a local day centre for adults with learning disabilities.

Sky Living For Sport Team Player

  • Bronze Winner, Joe Whittaker, Moorhead Sports College, Accrington who as a result of the scheme is more confident and can now express himself without getting frustrated, he has worked constructively and positively alongside other students with difficulties.
  • Silver Winner, Steven Lonsdale, Henry Mellish School and Sports College Nottingham. Steven has been given positions of responsibility and is promoting a positive working atmosphere within the Sky Living For Sport group.
  • Gold Winner,Luke McCubbine, Kirkby College, Nottingham.  Luke has quickly progressed on the Sky Living For Sport scheme and as well as excelling in sports activities he also mentored younger students who were less able than himself.

Sky Living For Sport “Buddy” Award

  • Bronze Winner, Amy Roberts, Tividale Community Arts College, Oldbury, West Midlands, who’s confidence improved so much that she took on the role of young leader with students who have social and emotional difficulties.
  • Silver Winner is Sophie Day, Sherbourne Learning Centre, Dorset Staff members have seen Sophie transformation into a more relaxed and approachable young woman, as well as improvements in her self esteem and academic work.
  • Gold Winner, Ryan Canavan, Arbour Vale School Specialist Sports College, Slough. Since his involvement in Sky Living For Sport Ryan has flourished and really come into his own academically, socially and emotionally.

Sky Living For Sport Young Achiever Award

  • Bronze Winner, Natasha Andrews, Moorhead Sports College, Accrington Natasha has increased her self-esteem and confidence and has been voted by her peers, on to the School Council.
  • Silver Winner Ellie Smith, The Castle School, Taunton through Sky Living for Sport Ellie’s attendance has improved and staff members have noted her changed attitude and positivity.
  • Gold Winner, Sinead Hoskins, Budmouth Technology College, Weymouth. Sinead is a changed character since being involved in Sky Living For Sport Her new leadership skills enabled her to start a 5 a side ladies football team, something that she had always wanted to be part of.

West Gate Community CollegeAs well as a host of prizes the winners were also able to meet Olympic Gold medallist and Sky Living For Sport Ambassador, Darren Campbell who presented the awards and gave a rousing speech to those involved in the programme: “Sport gave me the tool to express myself and people believed in me. That’s why we’re here because the Youth Sport Trust, BSkyB the athlete mentors involved in the scheme and myself believe in you and wish you luck with your journey.”

After the awards many of the schools took the opportunity to check out the sights of London, including West Gate Community College, who extended their partnership work by taking ultimate frisbee across the capital!
