Tuesday, 2 June 2009

Jason Gardener with pupilsPupils at Wellsway School in Keynsham, Bristol met Olympian Jason Gardener as part of their preparation for Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week.

The week, which runs from 29 June to 3 July 2009, will inspire millions of young people in more than 10,000 schools across the country to take part in more sport. So far over 227 schools within the Bristol and Bath area, including Wellsway School, have pledged to participate in Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week. The initiative supports the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People.

Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will profile school sport and celebrate all that has been achieved in PE and school sport over the past year. Working with the Youth Sport Trust, Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week 2009 will demonstrate that it is possible for each school-aged child in Bristol and Bath, and across the country, to do five hours of high quality PE and sport each week both in and out of school.

Louise Riddoch, Director of Specialism at Wellsway School said:

“Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is a great way of engaging children with sport and the pupils here at Wellsway School have been inspired by Jason Gardener’s visit. Incorporating the Olympic Games into Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will enable us to make London 2012 relevant to the children and parents in our community and increase pupil’s enthusiasm for sport both in and out of school.”

Jason Gardener, Olympic gold medallist and Youth Sport Trust School Sport Ambassador said:

“The sporting journey for many Olympians and Paralympians begins at school. It was the encouragement of my PE teacher and the positive sporting experiences I had at school that first inspired me to take my sport more seriously and sowed the seed of my determination to achieve my Olympic dream. I hope that by bringing London 2012 into classrooms, Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will inspire our next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.”
