ICAP Scholars for 2011
Tuesday 12 April 2011
The Youth Sport Trust in association with ICAP plc is delighted to be supporting 22 talented young athletes through the ICAP Scholarship programme.
The ICAP Scholars, who range from volleyball players and wheelchair basketballers to freestyle skiers and track cyclists, have been nominated by their respective national governing body [NGB] as having outstanding potential to achieve at the highest level.
Each 14 to 19 year-old will receive vital funding to cover essential training needs such as sports equipment and competition costs as well as access to top class coaching and medical support. School-aged athletes rely heavily on support, not only financially, but from their schools, sports clubs and families at a time when juggling their education, training and pressures of growing-up are so demanding.
Olympic silver medallist rower Guin Batten, who now works for the Youth Sport Trust, said: “Supporting young athletes to cope with the demands of their sport and schooling is critically important in helping them to achieve their potential in life and we are proud to be working with ICAP to do this.”
Nikki Studt, Global Charity Co-ordinator, ICAP plc, said: “This year we are delighted to be supporting The Youth Sport Trust as one of our charities. It is an incredibly worthwhile program and has some exceptionally talented young athletes who are part of it.”
The ICAP Scholarship programme is part of the Youth Sport Trust’s long-running Beckwith Scholarship scheme, named after the Trust’s Founder and President Sir John Beckwith, and which has supported a number of elite athletes at critical times in their careers.
Funding per athlete will depend on the needs of individual athletes and although the scholarships will be one off contributions, they will have a long term impact on the development and performance.
Former Beckwith Scholar Harry Aikenes-Aryeety is a current senior Great Britain athlete and was a member of the men’s 2008 Olympic Games 4x100m relay squad.
Harry said: “The financial backing provided has enabled me to take huge strides towards achieving my goals and ambition to become the best I can be as an elite athlete.”
The Youth Sport Trust, through its Junior Athlete Education [JAE] programme, works with schools, NGBs, parents and young people to develop the skills needed to be successful in sport, school and life.

Since its creation, ICAP - the world’s premier interdealer broker - has always given money to charity. In 1993, when the firm had grown to around 100 people in London, it was decided to do something on a larger and more innovative scale; something that would make a significant difference to charities. The idea of ICAP Charity Day was born; a day on which all revenues and commissions are given away to just a few charities, meaning each would receive a large amount of money which would really make a difference to their operations.
