Congratulations to new Sports Colleges

The Youth Sport Trust is delighted to announce that ten schools have been successful in their bid to attain Specialist Sports status and a further 12 schools have successfully applied for a second specialism in sport.  The announcement by the Department for Education and Skills brings the total number of Sports Colleges and Academies with a specialism in Sport to 422.

The announcement coincides with both the Youth Sport Trust’s annual Sports Colleges Conference, in Telford and the publication of Know the score an extensive research document, produced by the Youth Sport Trust, chronicling the role of Sports Colleges over the last ten years.

Steve Grainger, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: "Today’s timely announcement is great news and we congratulate all 22 schools on achieving their new status. Specialist sports status can help make a real difference to the lives of young people not just in terms of their successes on the school playing field but also in the classroom. The Know the Score document provides proven research into the success of Sport Colleges and shows how a sport-centred curriculum can help young people of all ages and abilities engage with education and inspire them to achieve their best.”
