Day 2 of Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week

Tuesday, 30 June 2009

Jason Gardener in Tyne and WearSchool children at Monkton Stadium near Jarrow in Tyne and Wear are today meeting Olympic gold medallist and Youth Sport Trust School Sport Ambassador Jason Gardener as part of their celebrations around Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week.

Over 300 pupils from across South Tyneside will participate in the local Bill Wilson Memorial Shield event which includes an opening and closing ceremony and a torch relay.

David Newton, Partnership Development Manager, said:

“Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is a great way of engaging children with sport and the pupils here at Monkton Stadium have been inspired by Jason Gardener’s visit. Incorporating the Olympic Games into Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will enable us to make London 2012 relevant to the children and parents in our community and increase pupils’ enthusiasm for sport both in and out of school.”

Elsewhere our other School Sport Ambassadors are out in force. Gail Emms is in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire where three School Sport Partnerships are attempting the world record skipping event. Over in Nuneaton in Warwickshire Sascha Kindred is visiting staff and pupils at Alderman Smith Sports College who are adopting an Olympic theme across the curriculum all week. Down in Plymouth Joe Glanfield will be seeing how 20 different primary schools celebrate with their girls’ outdoor activities day.

Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week runs from 29 June to 3 July 2009 and will inspire millions of young people in more than 10,000 schools across the country to take part in more sport. The initiative supports the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People.
