History

1994-1997

  • 1994: The Youth Sport Trust was established. Sir John Beckwith invested £1m each year for four years.
  • Developed TOP Play and TOP Sport.
  • Employed three area staff.
  • Secured BT as first sponsor and Lottery Funding.
  • Demand for more brought a need for an infrastructure.


1997-2000

  • 1997: First 11 designated Specialist Sports College become operational. The Youth Sport Trust was appointed as a support agency to the DfES.
  • Rapid growth of TOP programmes – more schools, more teachers and more young people.
  • Sports Colleges become successful and appealing.
  • Needed to create a national infrastructure involving all schools.


2000-2002

  • Increased awareness of the power of sport in improving education and sporting success among young people.
  • Prime Minister launched the Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) strategy.
  • The DfES/DCMS set a joint PSA target. By 2006, 75% of pupils had to do two hours of high-quality PE and school sport per week.
  • £459m new investment over three years.


2003-2006

  • Systematic roll out of PESSCL strategy.
  • Continued innovation, programmes include Secondary Playgrounds and TOP Activity.
  • 2006: Dame Kelly Holmes became National School Sport Champion, a role supported by the government, the Youth Sport Trust and Norwich Union. She also launched Norwich Union Girls Active.
  • 2006: The first UK School Games took place in Glasgow.


2007

  • January: The first multi-sport National Talent Orientation Camp took place with round 100 of Britain’s most talented youngsters in five Olympic sports.
  • February: Sports College Conference celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first designated Sports Colleges.
  • April: Our Step into Sport Camp proved a huge success with 400 youngsters taking part.
  • June: Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell became Sky Living For Sport Ambassador and Olympic heptathlete Denise Lewis was appointed Zoneparc Sporting Ambassador.
  • August: The second UK School Games in Coventry saw 1300 competitors in eight sports taking part.
  • September: YSTdirect launched and Dame Kelly Holmes kicked off the second year of Norwich Union Girls Active.


2008

  • February: The Prime Minister and Dame Kelly Holmes announced plans for a National School Sport Week in June.
  • May: UK School Games’ President Richard Caborn MP launched the UK School Games Champion Ambassadors programme.
  • August: Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington opened the UK School Games in Bath and Bristol.
  • September: Our Young Ambassador programme was granted the London 2012 Inspire Mark by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
  • December: Sue Campbell CBE, Chair of the Youth Sport Trust and UK Sport, was introduced to the House of Lords as life peer Baroness Campbell of Loughborough.
