The Professional Development programme is managed by a Consortium, which is made up of the Youth Sport Trust, association for PE and sports coach UK, and delivered locally through a network of Local Delivery Agencies.
The programme is one of the ten work strands within the Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) and is the key framework which supports the high quality element of the 2 hours within the curriculum and the associated learning provision beyond the curriculum. The work strand supports the delivery of the five hour offer through enhancing the quality of opportunities through targeted work based on the School Sport Survey and inspection finding evidence form.
The work strand aim:
To improve the quality of teaching and learning in Physical Education and school sport through a coordinated national professional development programme for teachers and adults supporting learning (ASL) in a school setting.
More specifically the work strand aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Physical Education and school sport through a coordinated national professional development programme for teachers, adults supporting learning and coaches working in a school setting, which:
- ensures high quality delivery of PE and school sport;
- ensures that the professional development programme is placed strategically to support PESSYP (the five hour offer) and is a major contribution to raising achievement and reducing attainment gaps in young people aged 5-16;
- ensures that the programme contributes to, and connects with, local needs; and,
- demonstrates clearly the impact the professional development programme is having on high quality delivery of PE and school sport.
