Using dance to raise young people's self-esteem (Corby School Sport Partnership)
The Youth Sport Trust works in partnership with schools and other relevant bodies. We help to implement and manage a huge variety of initiatives, designed to build a brighter future for young people through sport.

Below is just one example of how our work makes a difference.

The problem

How can we use dance to raise young people’s self-esteem?

The solution

  • Northants Dance, Corby Borough Council, Corby Community Arts and Northants County Council came together to plan, prepare and deliver a programme of dance based on the themes of ‘text’ and ‘narrative’.
  • Although some were already teaching dance, training and support were provided for teachers in nine primary schools to help them extend their Out-of-School- Hours Learning (OSHL) provision and to assist them in staging a performance.
  • These teachers were then able to choreograph dances with their young people, which were designed to raise their self-esteem.
  • 150 boys and girls from Key Stage 1– 4 across the partnership took part in dance opportunities, including a chance to participate in a culminating performance.

The results

  • Dance is now being taught in these schools throughout Key Stage 1–3.
  • Over the first two years of the project 23 groups of children have danced in three performances at a local arts centre attended by approximately 1,200 family and community members.

It worked because…

  • The agencies have formed a strong partnership.
  • The performances are appreciated by the wider community.
The Head Teacher’s verdict:  “The performance was quite stunning!"
