Louis Smith inspires City of Ely Community College pupils at his gym in Huntingdon
Louis Smith, London 2012 Olympic silver medal winning gymnast and Sky Sports Scholar, met pupils from City of Ely Community College at Huntingdon Gymnastic Club yesterday.
Louis met the pupils on behalf of Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free secondary schools initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, which uses sport stars and sport skills to improve the lives of thousands of young people across the UK.
Meeting students who recently took part in the school's Sky Sports Living for Sport project, Louis learnt how the initiative has helped the students to develop life skills and overcome challenges by harnessing the power of sport.
Louis is one of 11 athletes on Sky Sports Scholarships, a scheme which supports some of Britain and Ireland's successful athletes to help them fulfil their potential on the international stage and prepare them for life in the spotlight.
Commenting on his visit Louis said:
"Visiting the pupils at City of Ely Community College was a
fantastic experience. It's obvious the students have been inspired
by their involvement in Sky Sports Living for Sport, and it's good
to see that the school is really focussed on improving pupils'
lives through sport.
"I really enjoyed meeting all the pupils and hope my story of sporting success has inspired them to strive to achieve their best in all areas of life."
Pupils from City of Ely Community College were selected by their teacher to take part in Sky Sports Living for Sport and under the guidance of their Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor they are learning new skills both on and off the playing field to improve their lives. These include The British Athletes Commission's 'Six Keys to Success' which are mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success.
Louis Smith is an international gymnast who won an individual silver medal and team bronze at the London Olympic Games this year.
