Sporting Start

We work to give every child a sporting start in life through high quality PE and sport in primary schools.

We believe that providing primary children with a solid foundation in physical activity is crucial to prepare them for later life, helping shape them into healthy, social and active young people.

Supporting primary practitioners and providing them with the best teaching strategies and latest insight in PE and school sport practice is key to creating a dynamic and enjoyable PE experience for younger pupils. For this reason, we have developed a range of programmes to build the skills and confidence of teaching staff to help them deliver engaging PE and school sport.

By working with the Youth Sport Trust primary practitioners can access a range of revolutionary teaching methods for Key Stage 1 PE and a national training programme to support the teaching of Key Stage 2 pupils, both are delivered with supporting resources. To find out how you can be involved read our Start to Move and Matalan TOP Sport pages.

We have also been commissioned to deliver sports clubs and a range of competition formats specifically for primary pupils through Change4Life Sports Clubs and the School Games.

For pupils in Years 5 and 6 the Bikeability programme, usually run through your School Games Organiser host school or Local Authority Road Safety team, offers youngsters courses in cycling proficiency.

To ensure you are keeping your pupils safe during sport and physical activity, use our Safe Deployment of Sports Coaches in Primary Schools Check and Challenge Tool.

It is our hope, that by working with primary practitioners we will equip them with the knowledge, confidence and resources to help children develop the skills and lifestyle habits they need to get active for life.

Be a part of our Primary Membership scheme and ensure you are the first to hear about our primary work.
